Cape Types

Both of our Winter capes and Rain capes cover the chair.

Winter Cape - The outer layer is breathable waterproof Ultrex™ nylon and the inner lining is made of genuine Polartec™, patented to trap body heat, while it whisks moisture away. We offer the only winter capes on the internet with genuine Polartec™ lining and genuine waterproof breathable outers.

Rain Cape - The outer layer is breathable waterproof Ultrex™ nylon and the inner lining is made of Supplex™ which suits warmer weather where only waterproofing is needed.

We have many color combinations, since we custom make the capes, one by one. Our prices are quite reasonable when you consider the 3 1/2 to 4 yards each of the two expensive fabrics used, which are not found in fabric stores.

No arm insertion needed just lower and zip up. It has a 22" long front zipper for ease of entry, hood, and a shorter back. The cape back extends behind the chair and keeps backpacks dry and wind out.

Care

Machine washable on warm. Close the zipper and use a giant mesh wash bag to keep the hood intact. Do not dry clean. Remove from dryer after 40 minutes and hang to finish drying. Returnable within 3 weeks of shipping. Individually sewn in the U.S. with U.S. materials. Capes last 10 years if properly cared for.

Questions asked by our customers:

How is the cape “anchored” when it’s windy outside, so it does not fly about? Also, how warm is it, that is, how low can the temperature be and still keep one warm?

Anchoring: We don’t have the ability to anticipate where anchors would go on different chairs. We ask the customer to purchase 3-4 velcro D ring straps at a hardware store and sew them on the cape where there is a bar to wrap the strap around. There are not too many places where the cape lined with Polartec™ will fly up- Chicago, San Francisco, and places close to water or to Canada. The problem with anchoring the cape is that the person will have to bend down to their feet to open the strap, possibly losing their balance, and it will make noise in the washing machine and dryer. If you have a large laundry sink, that would be better than listening to the clicks of the D ring in the washer. I don’t wash my capes very often. I spot clean them, and I take them out of the dryer after 20 minutes and hang them. You could also buy magnets and mount them on the cape and on the metal bars of the chair. The magnets will drive you crazy, as will curtain weights sewn into the lining. There is a drawback to every anchoring system, unfortunately. I used to open an oval in the back overlap for the headrest support bar, until I braked suddenly, and my son got the zipper head pushed into his throat-the cape was anchored to his chair, not able to move forward, as he was.

Temperature: How low the temperature can be while still keeping the person comfortable depends on how much body heat the person produces. Genuine Polartec is rated for low temperatures, but some people don’t produce much body heat. We recommend that in bitter climates, or with a person around 100 pounds, people order a Polartec™ wrap to put under the cape. The wrap with the cape makes a double layer of Polartec™, which should go to below 0 degrees fahrenheit, if the person puts the cape on 10 minutes before going out and lets the body heat up. The wrap is excellent alone for spring and fall. My son wears his every day. In the morning it’s 40 degrees, but in the afternoon it’s 80 degrees, so the wrap comes home draped over his backpack. The winter cape is too bulky to do that. The wrap washes beautifully, and goes everywhere with him.

Sofshoes

Sold in pairs. These boots ride under the ankle, unlike our Polartec boots, which are 9" tall from the sole up. The Sofshoe is a summer boot and is good for people whose ankles turn under. Who don't need a lot of protection for their feet. Just something lightweight and stretchy to accommodate a hammer toe or delicate bunions.

A soft poly-cotton one piece shorts suit with short sleeves and opening options. 35% cotton, 65% polyester interlock knit stretches 4" in width and 1.5" in length and returns. Your choice: pullover style with snaps in the shorts, or nylon coil back zippers with no leg snaps. Warm wash and cool dry.

#834 Tube Slot - We add a slot for g-tubes for feeding or other uses. The slot has interfacing behind to prevent stretching out.

#835 Tube Slot with Protective Pocket - For years, we have made a protective pocket over our G tube slots to prevent pulling out the tube. The nurse unsnaps the pocket on any side the caregiver wishes and inserts the tube, or just connects the coiled tube to the pump tubing for feeding. The slot has interfacing behind to prevent stretching out, and the pocket is made of two thicknesses of soft, preshrunk fleece. 4.5” by 4.5” (approximate dimensions). It opens on one of its 4 sides with snaps. The pocket is serged all around to prevent ripping or fraying.

#836 Tube Slot with Supportive Pocket - 5.5” x 5.5” (approximate dimensions) pocket that not only covers the slot where the tube exits the body, but also supports the coiled tube inside. Polartec Wrap

This cape is not waterproof.

This wrap is perfect for chair users on cool, but not frigid days who don’t want a weighty coat. Non-pill, genuine, heat trapping, Polartec™ fleece. Some wraps are 200 weight and 300 weight. Put the back behind you, or leave it out over the seat back. One size. Comes to mid calf on petite adults, and just over the knee on tall adults. Tunic collar. 37” front, 24” back, 50” wide. No leaning forward to put your arms in sleeves! Lightweight, and yet warm! Never drags on wheels or falls off. 22” long front zipper. Styled without a hood so it can act as a liner to the winter cape on below zero days. Genuine Polartec™ fleece does not pill, run, or shrink. It washes well on warm and dries on cool in the dryer. It will last for many years if machine washed with non linty items in tepid water and air dried. 100% polyester. Polartec Cold Weather Cloak

This cape is not waterproof. Some capes are 200 or 300 weight Polartec fleece.

Warmer than the wrap, this cape has a hood and is made from the same, yet heavier, genuine Polartec™ fleece. 22” front zipper. Front is 37” long, the back 24”, and the width, 50”. Sides come to within 5” of the wrist. 22” long front zipper. Put it on a few minutes before going out to feel your body heat rising inside the cape. Feels very light, but feel the warmth! Polartec Winter Boots

Sold in pairs. Wonderful for cold, swollen, problem feet that walk very little. Wait until you feel how warm they are! For feet that are always cold and have curling toes or feet which turn in or outward. This boot stretches to accommodate you! Double thick Polartec moisture wicking, heat-trapping fleece. Left and right are identical-no curve in. Put your foot on a ruler and read heel to toe length. Grip-Tak non-slip grid sole with neoprene cushioning inside a pocket above the soles. Generous fit, with no hard or rigid surfaces. Roomy ankles stretch to fit swelling. Machine wash. Remove neoprene insert. 9" front zipper. 12" high - tall boot. Extra slender feet may have to size down a size.

Sizing Tips

Kids Lockout Suit

Made from preshrunk, colorfast 10 ounce brushed bull denim, the Kids Lockout Suit is a back-zipper jumper to hamper undressing. Sleeveless and collarless, it is worn over a tee shirt. The back zipper is covered by a 7” long overlap with snaps. Long, tapered shorts discourage reaching up the leg. A generous torso length allows for easier movement, since there is no stretch in the denim. Elastic at the waist left and right helps the suit shape to the wearer. Narrow armholes prevent pulling the arm in.

Please be aware that this suit does not stretch. Careful measurement is required, see instructions below to find your size.

Back Open Tees

Eye candy! Front entry stretchy polycotton knit back-open tees in 6 sizes in navy, charcoal, and black with a print pocket in 3 designs - blue batik, jewels, or blue galaxy. Back open! Excellent post surgery, or for those with immobile or weak arms. Draw the sleeves up the arms and shoulder from the front, and have someone adjust the shoulder fit and back overlap. Either 2 strips of 2 snaps 3" apart or 2 spaced hook and loop strips close down to the small of the back. For E Z open, leave the bottom overlapped only. Snap closure will require assistance. Hook and loop closure jumps closed, but needs to be closed before washing on warm on permanent press. 65% polyester, 35% cotton, this soft interlock knit stretches and returns. Stains? Soak in the washer with Oxyclean, then wash on warm.

Supplex Back Open Jacket

Supplex is a soft, cotton like nylon, a perfect weight for spring to Fall. Our supplex jacket is a lightweight, back open jacket in black with charcoal rib at the neck and wrists. There is a partial open 12” front zipper and fully open back with hook and loop tabs. Slide the sleeves up the arms and draw the shoulders up, pulling the jacket around to overlap in the back. It closes itself.

Adult Denim Lockout Suit

All adult Lockout Suits have long legs. Some suits have shorts and may not be available in all sizes.

Its a sturdy full length denim or twill suit with short sleeves and a back zipper with a tab to cover the zipper head. At the waist there are elastic insets to cinch it in, and a chest pocket, hip pockets and a front yoke completes the unisex look. The fabric has no stretch; you need at least 3" longer than your torso to fit in this suit.

Sizing Tips

• A petite adult is for a 90 pounder who is under 5 feet and whose chest is becoming defined. This suit is wider for the developing figure.
• A small adult is 100-120 pounds, about 5 foot -5’2”; their chest has developed. The suit itself has a 42” chest.
• A medium adult is 5’4” to 6’ and about 140-160 pounds. A shorter person who weighs 150 pounds will find the suit torso and legs long.
• A large adult is about 170-180 pounds and about 5’10”. The suit torso is 36” long and the chest is 46”.
• An XL adult is about 200 pounds and 6’ tall. If they are XL because they are wide, the suit may be too long in the torso or legs.
• A 2-3XL adult who is heavy, not tall, will have to hem the legs. The torso of the suit at this size is about 38” long and the inseam is 29”.

Seat Belt Sliders

Protects your seat belt. American made from 100% polyester or nylon cordura. Wash briefly in warm water in the sink. Hang to dry. If liquids begin to permeate, remove the Sliders promptly and slide on another pair. The seat belt will stay clean even if the slider dampens. Eventually, you may need to renew the stain guard or waterproofing using a spray like TriNova or Scotchguard. Enjoy your Sliders!

Adult Size - 17” wide by 30” long, it covers neck to thighs of large adults. 17” x 17” terry panel below a 12” x 17” knit yoke, backed by supple, waterproof Taslan nylon. Discrete- looking in solid dark colors, it appears to be a vest to the casual observer. 20” from the neck rib to the bottom.

Genuine Polartec™ fleece with contrasting interlock knit or sweatshirt fleece lining. Either lining is a polyester cotton mix. Polartec™ fleece is a machine washable 100% polyester. It is lightweight, yet traps body heat amazingly well! The lower part of the hood covers the neck down to the shoulders. On the adult size, there is a 2" visor-like extension at the top of a 24" head as a visor. On the child size, there is a 3" visor-like extension on a 20 1/2" temple.

Layer it under your winter cape for added warmth. The scarf keeps drafts from the neck area. Put it over your hood-less jacket. It's reversible - wear the thick, warm Polartec™ next to your skin, or the soft, stretchy knit. Wear either color to match your outerwear. Dress it up with a colorful pin closing the two parts of the scarf.

Billy Shoes - Black Perf Lowtop

We have many customers with small feet, so we have been looking for easy -on shoes for chair users with small feet, here are a few EZ on shoes.

Billy shoes are good -looking and so easy to put on! This shoe is low profile. The top opens with a zipper, which is less clumsy looking than a velcro overlap. With the top folded aside, put your foot down on the open shoe, then zip. There is no pushing the foot into the shoe, wiggling, and then pulling the heel up.

We have 3 sizes available. Use the guide below to measure Length, Width, Instep and Girth.

Please be aware: They won’t fit if your foot has a high instep, you use AFOs, your foot curls down, or your girth is too large (see size guide above to measure your foot). For everyone else, these shoes are great!

If one foot is larger than the other, use the larger girth. Adults with small, but wide feet, or a curling foot, don't want to choose Billy shoes.

Cape Protecting Scarf (Set of 2)

Sold in packages of 2. Problems with white discoloration and a saline odor on the front of your winter cape? Our XL terry lined scarf will absorb the wetness and save the neck area of any size cape from constant washing: 34” at the long (snap) end, 16” wide at the tucks, and 12” from the neck down to the point. Arrange the scarf so that the wetness goes into the terry (inside) at the tucks, not on the twill facing out, where it will run off. The cape will last much longer if washed sparingly, whereas the terry scarf can go in the wash in hot water daily. You will preserve your fine investment of a winter cape! In royal blue for now. More colors will be added in the future.

No returns and no exchanges on all sale pre-made pants and shorts. No options can be added. Please be sure of your size. These pants are pre-made and are first come first serve. Please note that the photo is only a representation of our pants. If you need a specific color or size please order Custom-Sitter Pants. Pants marked as SLIM HIPS. The slim sizes are good for anyone whose hips size matches their waist. If your hips are 4" or so larger than your waist, pass the slim sizes by.

Our pant patterns have generous hips (measure all the way across at the crotch) for room for cathing or absorbent briefs. A pant marked as "slim" has the writen waist measurement, but has slimmer hips than usual, for those for whom only their waists have spread, due to prolonged sitting. Certain pants may have some options already; for example: pull loops, fake fly, pockets, side zippers, etc..

Sitter pants or wheelchair jeans are much more comfortable for chair users! We have been making them for over 25 years. They are cut higher in the back and lower in the front so they don't hit the ribs in front, or ride down in back. We offer the most moderately priced sitter pants on the internet!

We enlarged our Sidekick Bag to make it a superior product, with partitions for your glasses, cell phone, garage door opener, or keys. We kept the flap over the top so you can keep your coin purse out of sight and have your free monogrammed name or image placed there. Cordura is sturdier than the competitor's nylon. The new Super Sidekick is 12" long x 9" high, with 15 color combinations available, using the same durable and colorful printed, woven polyester straps. These 2" wide woven polyester webbing straps are more durable and hold better because they are wider and longer, offering more possibilities to arrange the bag on the armrest or a handy bar. It won't fall, sag, or be pulled off your chair. You can get an amazing amount of stuff inside- sunglasses, wallet, even a can of soda! Some colors of cordura may in time show soil. Just soak them in the sink in warm water. It will withstand a little scrubbing.

Knit Summer Lounger

Now with optional printed yoke in Jewel or Galaxy print. Dress without standing or drawing the garment across the back! Designed with a longer back for a chair user. Unzip the front and lay it in the chair, with the knit lounger hanging over the chair back. If leaning forward is difficult, bring up the two bottoms of the front zipper before sitting. Sit in the chair on the lounger and insert your arms in the sleeves. Insert the zipper head into the other side and zip. You’re dressed! Zip up the zipper before you wash on warm on the permanent press setting. Dry briefly. The Knit Summer Lounger is made of 65% cotton, 35% polyester interlock knit stretches 4" in width and 1.5" in length and returns.
